Arminian
Grace that enables
Broadly, Arminian theology emphasizes God’s initiating grace that restores the ability
to respond, alongside real human responsibility. Election is often understood in light
of God’s foreknowledge of faith; Christ’s atonement is offered for all.
The accent falls on a God who sincerely invites, and on creatures who may freely
receive—or resist—that grace.
Reformed
Grace that prevails
Broadly, Reformed theology emphasizes God’s sovereign election and effectual calling.
Salvation rests wholly on God’s purpose; the will is bound until grace renews it.
Christ’s atoning work is particular and certain for those the Father gives to the Son.
The accent falls on a God who saves to the uttermost, and on grace that does not
merely offer—but accomplishes—redemption.
