Psalms 100

Verses 1–5 WEB Voices

A brief psalm of thanksgiving. All the earth is called to serve the LORD with gladness and come before him singing, knowing that he is God, that he made us, and that we are his people and the sheep of his pasture. Worshipers are invited through his gates with thanks and praise, because the LORD is good, his loving kindness is everlasting, and his faithfulness lasts to all generations.

Psalms 100:1

1Shout for joy to the LORD, all you lands!

Arminian

Shout for joy to the LORD, all you lands! Shared thanksgiving: all-earth joyful noise. Wesley's notes on this psalm are sparse; the plain call stands.

Thanksgiving is loud and wide. All the earth is invited—do not shrink the choir to a corner.

Reformed

Calvin: joyful noise of all the earth to Jehovah—thanksgiving service; in prophetic spirit the Church gathered from the nations is in view.

Joyful noise; all the earth. Both camps stand together in catholic thanksgiving, not inventing a fork here.

Psalms 100:2

2Serve the LORD with gladness. Come before his presence with singing.

Arminian

Serve with gladness. Come before his presence with singing. The psalm calls for glad service and a singing approach to God.

Service without gladness misunderstands the Master. Singing is how presence is entered here.

Reformed

Calvin: serve Jehovah with gladness; come before him with joy—kindness supplies ground for rejoicing in service.

Glad service; presence with singing. Duty and delight are not rivals in this verse.

Psalms 100:3

3Know that the LORD, he is God. It is he who has made us, and we are his. We are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.

Arminian

Know that the Lord, he is God! He made us, and we are his; his people, sheep of his pasture. Knowing deity; Maker; belonging as flock.

Know—repent of many gods and self-making myths. Sheep language is identity before it is comfort.

Reformed

Calvin: know Jehovah himself is God; he made us, not we ourselves; his people and sheep of his pasture—rebuke of presumption and idol-fashioning; pure knowledge keeps his glory unimpaired; meditate his making and flock-care.

He is God; he made us; we are his people and sheep. Creator-claim and covenant flock in one breath.

Psalms 100:4

4Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise. Give thanks to him, and bless his name.

Arminian

Enter gates with thanksgiving, courts with praise; give thanks; bless his name. Gated entry; thanks; blessing the name.

Thanksgiving is the password. Blessing the name fills courts louder than complaints.

Reformed

Calvin: enter gates with praise, courts with rejoicing; give glory and bless his name—nearly the opening call restated for public worship.

Gates; courts; thanks; bless his name. Structured worship carries the joyful noise inside.

Psalms 100:5

5For the LORD is good. His loving kindness endures forever, his faithfulness to all generations.

Arminian

For the Lord is good; steadfast love forever; faithfulness to all generations. Shared close: goodness; everlasting hesed; enduring truth/faithfulness.

The call to praise rests on reasons. Forever love and generation-spanning faithfulness make thanksgiving rational.

Reformed

Calvin: Jehovah is good; mercy forever; truth from generation to generation—grounds of praise that do not expire with one age.

Both camps end in undivided thanksgiving to the same good Lord.

“Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all ye lands. Serve the LORD with gladness: come before his presence with singing. Know ye that the LORD he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name. For the LORD is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations.”

Reformed Notable voices

“Let all the earth make a joyful noise to Jehovah. Serve Jehovah with gladness; come into his presence with joyfulness. Know that Jehovah himself is God: he made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. The psalm urges the thanksgiving part of worship and, inviting all earth's inhabitants, points prophetically to the Church gathered from the nations. Serve with gladness—his kindness gives abundant ground for joy. Know that Jehovah is God—rebuke of those who invent many gods and many worships; retain pure worship so his glory is not despoiled. Enter his gates with praise, courts with rejoicing; give glory and bless his name—because Jehovah is good, his mercy forever, his truth from generation to generation.”
