Psalms 91

He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. Wesley: He—makes God his habitation and refuge. The one who dwells in the secret place will rest under the shadow of the Almighty.

Habitation is chosen posture. Live where the Name shelters.

Calvin: dwells in the secret place of the High One; abides under the Almighty's shadow—faith's residence language.

Shelter of the Most High; shadow of the Almighty. Providence is a home, not a slogan.

I will say of the LORD, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” Spoken trust—refuge, fortress, my God.

Say it to the LORD, not only about him. Trust is addressed speech.

Calvin: I will say to Jehovah—hope and fortress; my God; in him will I hope—personal appropriation.

Refuge; fortress; my God; trust. Confession fuels courage.

For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the deadly pestilence. Wesley: Pestilence—sudden as a snare. Deliverance from trap and plague.

Hidden snare and open plague both named. Deliverance is promised to the dweller.

Calvin: snare of the fowler and noxious pestilence—likely hidden mischief and open aggression; divine protection covers both.

The psalm names both the snare and the pestilence. Trust is not naive about danger's forms.

He will cover you with his feathers. Under his wings you will take refuge. His faithfulness is your shield and rampart. Both sides agree: wing-cover; faithfulness as armor.

Mother-bird image invites nearness. Truth/faithfulness is the hard shield beside soft wings.

Calvin: protect with wings; under feathers safe; truth a shield and buckler—tenderness and armor together.

God covers his people with his feathers and wings, and his faithfulness is their shield. Attributes protect as truly as power does.

You shall not be afraid of the terror by night, nor of the arrow that flies by day, Wesley: By night—most terrible, least avoidable; Arrow—calamity; By day—secret and open. Night terror and day arrow without slavish fear.

Courage is gift of dwelling, not denial of arrows. Fear not—because covered.

Calvin: not afraid for terror by night nor arrow by day—round-the-clock threats met by trust.

Fearlessness is relative to refuge, not to risklessness of the world.

“Nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness, nor of the destruction that wastes at noonday.” Wesley: Darkness—invisible, unforeseen. Dark pestilence; noon destruction.

Danger unseen in the dark and danger at high noon are covered alike. No hour is orphaned from the shadow.

Calvin: pestilence in darkness; destruction at noonday—completes the catalog of fears quieted.

Catalog drives us under wings, not into superstition.

A thousand may fall at your side, and ten thousand at your right hand; but it will not come near you. Mass falling; nearness of plague denied to the dweller.

Hyperbolic assurance of care—not a license to test God. Nearness of harm is relativized by the refuge.

Calvin: thousand fall at side, ten thousand at right; it shall not come nigh—providence discriminating under judgment scenes.

Thousands fall; not come near. Hold promise without turning it into presumption (cf. Matt 4 misuse of vv. 11–12).

You will only look with your eyes and see the recompense of the wicked. Spectator of just recompense, not participant in ruin.

Seeing judgment is sobering, not bloodthirsty. Recompense belongs to God.

Calvin: only with eyes behold and see the reward of the wicked—vindication observed.

Safety is unto witnessing God's justice, not private gloating.

Because you have made the LORD your refuge, and the Most High, who is my refuge— Shared: because-clause—LORD as dwelling/refuge grounds the promises.

"because" ties shelter to practice of dwelling. Refuge is inhabited, not merely admired.

Calvin: because Jehovah is my protection / Most High thy habitation—resting with confidence averts coming evils; troubles still come, yet under protection.

Made the LORD dwelling; Most High my refuge. Cause of safety is relational trust.

“No evil shall happen to you, neither shall any plague come near your dwelling.” No evil allotted; no plague near the tent.

Tent-language is household care. Promise shepherds fear without denying all hardship elsewhere in Scripture.

Calvin: no evil befall; no plague near dwelling—commendation of providence for slow hearts that need driving to God.

Read with the psalter's other laments; care is no illusion, not a charm.

For he will put his angels in charge of you, to guard you in all your ways.

Angels serve the heirs under God's command. Ways means paths of obedience, not leaps from temple tops.

Calvin: given his angels charge to keep thee in all thy ways—providence uses messengers; "ways" are the believer's paths.

Promise is pastoral, not a dare to test God.

They will bear you up in their hands, so that you won’t dash your foot against a stone. Wesley: Bear thee—uphold as a child. Both traditions see: hands bearing up; foot protected.

The picture is of a child carried in careful hands. Care in ordinary steps—not spectacle jumps.

Calvin: bear upon hands lest foot dash on a stone—sustaining care in goings.

Bear up; lest foot strike. Devil quoted this to Jesus; the church reads it as care, not carnival.

You will tread on the lion and cobra. You will trample the young lion and the serpent underfoot. Wesley: Lion—prostrate; Dragon—pernicious creatures and enemies. Dominion over deadly threats.

Hostility underfoot by God's enablement. Courage without cruelty.

Calvin: tread on lion and adder; young lion and dragon trampled—enemies and perils subdued under the protected one.

Tread lion and adder; trample serpent. Victory imagery serves trust, not swagger.

“Because he has set his love on me, therefore I will deliver him. I will set him on high, because he has known my name. Wesley: Because—words of God. Divine speech—love's cling and knowing the Name → deliverance and protection.

Hold fast in love; know the Name. Relational conditions are invitations to cleave.

Calvin: because he has set his love on me / known my name—I will deliver and set on high. God's own oracle closes the psalm; love and knowledge of the Name mark the one he exalts.

Holds fast in love; knows my name; I deliver and protect. Promise is personal speech from God.

When he will call on me, and I will answer him. I will be with him in trouble. I will deliver him, and honor him.

Presence in trouble precedes rescue. Honor is God's gift after the night.

Calvin: he shall call; I will answer; with him in trouble; deliver and honor—companionship in affliction, not exemption from it.

Call; answer; with him in trouble; rescue; honor. "With him in trouble" keeps the promise honest.

With long life I will satisfy him with long life, and show him my salvation.” Shared close: satisfied length of days; shown salvation.

The promise is satisfaction, not merely more years. Salvation shown is the climax above longevity.

Calvin: long life among benefits—yet sometimes early death is for the children's advantage; the godly are more satisfied with a short span than the wicked with thousands of years. Salvation shown is the chief gift.

Length serves satisfaction and salvation's display, not superstition.
